At the end of the 19th century in Europe, the First World War interrupted border crossings that had suddenly become commonplace. As a result, hundreds of thousands of citizens of the military opponents resided in the warring states. Ringo Müller examines the controversial handling of these "hostile foreigners" and shows how the military conflict changed ideas about foreign nationals, how it opened up room for maneuver towards them and made it possible to draw social boundaries.
