Horace McNickle (Edward Asner) is serving prison time for counterfeiting. On the week before Christmas, he escapes from prison dressed as Santa Claus - due to his uncanny resemblance to St. Nick. McNickle hides out from the police in a nearby suburban neighbourhood where he meets two local children who think he is the real Santa Claus. McNickle takes advantage of the kids naivity to help him get his ill-gotten loot, which his partner has hidden in department store Christmas decorations. But after the kids come through, it dawns on him that he has always missed the true meaning of the holidays and rather than make good on his escape, he tries to make good on his promises.
