Description: A MUST HAVE OFFICIAL RE-ISSUE ON MAD BUTCHER RECORDS 2022 The Piranhas were formed in 1977 and originally came from the Brighton punk scene. They became known for their version of the South African folk standard "Tom Hark". The Kwela song had been a hit for Elias & His Zig Zag Jive Flutes in the 1950s, which had already had a ska adaptation by Millie Small. "Tom Hark" was released by Sire Records (in Germany by Hansa International) in 1980 and was a top ten hit in the UK charts in late summer 1980. In 1981 the band split up. Their guitarist and singer Bob Grover released with a new line-up as The Piranhas - with the addition "featuring Boring Bob Grover - the Man with the Golden Trumpet" - mainly songs in the so-called Kwela-Ska sound. Next came a new line-up featuring former Dodgems bassist Gary Turner, who had more success with Zambezi, but this was short-lived and the band was not revived until 2010 when Bob Grover and John Helmer reunited, complemented by Owen Kellett on bass, Steve Burnaby Davies on drums and Dominic Dring on sax. In 2014 the final end finally followed. The self-titled debut album was originally released on ATTRIX RECORDS in 1980 and was released the same year on SIRE RECORD/Hansa with different titles (now also featuring Tom Hark) and a different track order. The original was recorded on a "very tight budget". The band got air play through John Peel, who played their single "I Don't Want My Body". Anyone who didn't feel like designing the cover individually in a "painting-by-numbers" manner, even back then, could contact Suzy from the Piranhas fan club. Today you'll probably have to do the coloring yourself. Musically, their mix of ska, funk, dub, reggae and mod elements can best be compared to the sound of The Beat, early Madness and The Wire. The album is very varied, smart and danceable and simply timelessly good!!!! A cup of coffee!
