Brütal Legend tells the story of Eddie Riggs, the ultimate rower. The rowing king Eddie is the first to call when you want to tune your guitar or build a stage. With a great love for Hotrods and a photographic memory for the envelope of all hard rock records and its lyrics, he has always felt a little outside, as if he should have been born earlier when the music was more authentic.

One night, Eddie suffers as a result of a stage accident. His blood drips down on the belt buckle he inherited from his father and his blood awakens an ancient thirst that takes him to a strange, yet familiar world. He wakes up in a place where all hard rock lyrics have come true and where the evil emperor Doviculus and his demon army (The Tainted Coil) have enslaved the last people.

The remaining peoples resistance army is led by Lars Halford, his sister Lita and the mysterious Ophelia. They are far from helpless but need someone who can unite them, organize them and lead them into battle. What they need is the king of rowers! Eddie commands a barbaric army of Hotrods, amps, leather and chrome that will throw the ancient world into the era of hard rock.
