In 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' (2007) Alvin (voice of Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) are discovered and adopted by struggling songwriter Dave Seville (Jason Lee). When Dave finds them singing some of his songs, the foursome decide to join forces and embark on a career in the music business. When success beckons however, unscrupulous record company boss Ian Hawke (David Cross) decides that he could make a lot more money from the boys if Dave was out of the picture. In 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel' (2009), when Alvin, Simon and Theodore are forced to put aside their music superstardom and go back to school, they are given the challenge of saving the school's music department by winning the $25,000 prize in a battle of the bands. But the trio unexpectedly meet their match in three singing female chipmunks known as The Chipettes: Brittany (Anna Faris), Eleanor (Amy Poehler) and Jeanette (Christina Applegate). Romantic and musical sparks fly in the face off that ensues. In 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked' (2011) Alvin, Simon and Theodore take to the high seas. When their luxury liner becomes grounded on a remote island during a tropical cruise, the boys soon discover their secluded paradise is not as deserted as it seems. As they struggle to contend with the heat, the insects and the close proximity to one another, the chipmunks begin to develop a few strange personality traits.
