In the small French town of Mereux there is a great deal of unease when a German garrison is stationed there in 1940. The local men quickly form a resistance group and mount an attack which goes horribly wrong, resulting in two of their members being captured, tortured and publicly executed. One of the dead men was the brother of Maria (Petra Davies), who, after his death, vows to exact revenge on the German officer responsible and so decides to help the French Resistance any way she can.
