Single mother Roberta Guaspari (Meryl Streep) has achieved amazing results teaching violin to tough inner-city kids. However, despite her success, the latest round of budget cuts have decreed that her music programme will have to be shut down. A concerted effort to keep the project alive ensues, driven by both fellow staff and the students whose lives Guaspari has touched.
