When the centre is threatened with closure by budget cuts Ali is persuaded to run for the job of local MP, bringing him to the attention of scheming Deputy Prime Minister (Charles Dance), who is keen to somehow discredit the Prime Minister (Michael Gambon) through association with a loose cannon like Ali.
